As a Senior Director / Director working on the R&D Communications team, you will be empowered to play a key leadership role in one of the most exciting times in Takeda s history and have a significant impact on communications strategy, planning, and execution. A typical day will include:

POSITION OBJECTIVES:

  • Boston-based, the Senior Director/ Director R&D Communications oversees and directs the creation of strategies and processes for the development of external communication plans and materials for the R&D organization with an emphasis on the pipeline and partnerships.
  • The role will provide expertise and advice to partners within the various R&D functions including Therapeutic Area Unit heads (Oncology, Neuroscience, GI), Head of Research, Head of Center for External Innovation and work collaboratively with the global corporate communication and business unit communication teams.
  • Be an advocate on behalf of R&D across internal and external channels
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Head of R&D Communications with regard to complex problems, current and future initiatives, strategies, and budget allocation

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide strategy and vision for R&D communications including:
  • Participate in the development and implementation of an annual strategic communication plan for R&D that reflects the organization s strategic vision, pipeline assets and key partnerships
  • Working within the organization to provide leadership and expertise to design, coordinate and implement communication strategies and objectives for R&D globally
  • Partnering with Therapeutic Area Unit heads, head of Research and other stakeholders to draft and finalize internal and externally-facing documents.
  • Responsible for developing thought leadership platforms and news strategy for key pipeline inflections, investments and partnership milestones
  • Nurture relationships with reporters from top tier and pharma industry media
  • Serve as the R&D corporate spokesperson with media when needed
  • Responsible for the creation, review and execution of communication materials for the activities of Takeda s partnering activities and agreements (including press releases and external newsflow)
  • Lead or support R&D external communication activities when issues and/or crises arise
  • Leverage Takeda external communication channels, including social media and make recommendations to continuously improve our external communications approach.
  • Align R&D external communication strategies and plans within R&D and with other key divisional or corporate initiatives, including appropriate process development in collaboration with Global Communications and Communication teams outside of R&D
  • Responsible for ensuring that all R&D external communication materials and activities comply with Takeda operating procedures and the relevant industry regulations (FDA, EMA, JPMA regulations and codes)
  • Act as responsible party for R&D external communications budget, including public relations agency and vendor relationships and budget management

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

To Be Considered for the Senior Director Level:

  • Bachelors required; advanced degree in communications preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of communications experience in a PR agency or corporate setting.
  • Minimum of 8 years of pharmaceutical or biotechnology, or health care industry experience required.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience developing external communication strategies for a global complex organization required.

To Be Considered for the Director Level:

  • Bachelors required; advanced degree in communications preferred.
  • Minimum 12 years of communications experience in a PR agency or corporate setting.
  • Minimum of 6 years of pharmaceutical or biotechnology, or health care industry experience required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience developing external communication strategies for a global complex organization required.

Required at All Levels:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to include oral and written communication. Strong presentation skills to communicate and persuade a wide range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating strong, measurable external communication programs that are aligned with organizational goals and strategies.
  • Strong writing and message development skills with an ability to write and adapt to various styles and formats.
  • Significant experience writing and managing development of external-facing material and is proficient at managing a document approval process that involves multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop communications that convey complex ideas in simple, concise and creative ways to engage employees.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and providing communication counsel to senior level employees/executives.
  • Strong people skills and matrix management skills to lead and influence key stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and under extreme pressure with proficient attention to detail.
  • Ability to balance short- and long-term priorities.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to independently manage multiple projects simultaneously across geographies and time zones.
  • Proven success in working with outside vendors such as public relation agencies, design firms and production companies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Manual dexterity required to operate office equipment (i.e. computers, phones, etc.).
  • Carrying, handling and reaching for objects.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time while travelling.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to travel to various meetings or Takeda sites, including overnight trips. Domestic and international travel required.
  • Requires approximately 15% travel.
