As a Staff Scientist, Electrophysiology working on the Early Target Discovery team, you will be empowered to design and implement functional characterization strategies for disease associated genes/variants identified from patient genetics.
The Staff Scientist, Electrophysiology, based in San Diego, is responsible for functional characterization of genetic variants aiding target identification and validation (TIDVAL) in alignment with Takeda Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) priorities with the goal of resulting in the initiation of formal drug discovery campaigns by Takeda Research. Utilizes cutting edge technologies within electrophysiology for functional characterization of ion channels in endogenous or recombinantly expressed cells and circuits in vivo or in ex vivo preparations. Studies mechanistic drug-target interactions using manual or high-throughput screening platforms based on calcium transients and/or action potentials, and validation of potential therapeutic pathways using patch clamp electrophysiology.
- Design and implement functional characterization strategies for disease associated genes/variants identified from patient genetics
- Responsible for electrophysiology work streams in TIDVAL
- Identify opportunities to collaborate with partners (academic, biotech, and CRO) to enhance in-house capabilities.
- Represent own research findings to leadership and project teams.
- Professionally represents the organization in collaborations, partnership discussions, and external conferences.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
- Ph.D. in Cellular biology or Neuroscience related discipline with 2+ years of experience in biotech industry or academic setting and publication record OR
- MS in Life Science with 5+ years of relevant experience and publication record.
- Extensive hands-on electrophysiology experience in some of the techniques: Manual or high throughput electrophysiology, single channel recordings from cell or intracellular organelle membranes, nerve fiber recordings, slice electrophysiology, molecular biology, and recombinant expression
- Participated in Neuroscience research, ideally relating to diseases aligned with Takeda s interests in Neuroscience.
- Track record of working on complex problems, and ability to integrate data from multiple disciplines
- Strong interpersonal, collaboration skills to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced, matrix environment, and the ability to work through conflicts
- Highly motivated and flexible with a positive can-do attitude
- Ability to provide novel creative solutions to challenging problems
- Desire to learn and tackle new challenges and initiatives
- Working in cold room (4 C)
- Able to lift or move up to 10 pounds on a regular basis in the course of daily work.
- Exposure to hazardous/toxic/dangerous chemicals
- Less than or equal to 5% travel, consisting of one to two relevant scientific meetings and/or trips to meet with collaborators and CROs
