Novartis is recruiting for Disease Area Head in the Rheumatology Therapeutic Area to be located in East Hanover, NJ, filled at a level commensurate with experience.

The selected candidate will provide disease area leadership with particular focus on the spondyloarthropathies, with critical input into the strategy, development, management, and implementation for Phase IIIB/IV product support studies for Rheumatology programs; will also be involved in providing strategic input for global development programs and registration. The position includes extensive involvement with global development colleagues, marketing and sales, including conduct of field force training, sales material development and review, presentations and leadership of advisory boards, medical communications strategy development and implementation, and meetings with major healthcare providers; with a focus on meeting the needs of a diverse set of stakeholders (patients and medical experts alike). The position requires longstanding clinical, medical and scientific experience in the field of Rheumatology, with a strong existing network of collaborations in the academic Rheumatology community.
Additional representative responsibilities include the following:
Foster innovation through high performing team behaviors with a clear focus on people, performance, and patients.
Develop an external engagement strategy to build, sustainable strong relationships with investigators, academic centers and the Rheumatology community, serve as face of Rheumatology therapeutic area lead, be able to engage medically and scientifically at eye level; be able to expand an existing strong network in SpA and AS and Rheumatology in general
Leverage experience in clinical Rheumatology and clinical development to secure strong science in the development and launch of commercially viable products utilizing aggressive timelines; integrate scientific rigor, medical need and commercial value into compelling strategies in support of successful registration and marketing.
Identify and implement high value strategies for product life cycle development and expansion across the entire Novartis portfolio.
Lead strategic US Medical input to Global Development on clinical development with focus on SpA and AS (Phase II - IV), pre-registration, label extension, pre- and post-market launch strategies, and life cycle management.
Contribute to the development of new indications for existing products.
Develop and implement reliable and high-value communication strategies for new and existing products.
Team responsibilities include U.S. medical affairs support for in-line and pre-launch products, including strategic and tactical planning and design, implementation and timely completion of Phase 4 studies and addressing post-marketing concerns.
Enable a positive team environment and effectively interact with global clinical, scientific and marketing teams and lead by direct and indirect influence.
Collaborate with DRA to develop regulatory strategy, including regulatory stakeholder management, submission strategies and advisory committee strategy. Support label negotiations and other FDA interact ions.
Provide strategic input to and medical due diligence (when required) for business development and licensing.
Prioritize and resource pre-market launches and post-market medical programs.
Successfully create a bridge between clinical development teams and provide medical expertise to the commercial product development teams.
U.S. and European travel required. (20-25% annually, up to 40% seasonally).

MD degree with 8-10 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in medical affairs in area of Rheumatology is required (or alternatively academic leader in Rheumatology with exceptional, longstanding experience as medical expert and in working with the pharmaceutical industry). Board Certification/Eligibility in Rheumatology is strongly preferred. The individual needs to demonstrate expert understanding of the therapeutic approaches to rheumatalogic treatment, areas of unmet need and her/his involvement in ongoing or previous pivotal development programs for SpA and AS is required.
Strong experience in managing clinical trials is essential. Rheumatology clinical trial research and leadership experience in a pharmaceutical or equivalent environment including biological treatments and small molecules is required. Leadership experience across programs in a global development setting required, demonstrated co-leadership of medical-commercial, high-performing teams.
Firm working knowledge of GCP. Track record of successfully applying scientific and clinical methodology, protocol design of pivotal and post-marketing Rheumatology trials, advanced project management in a matrix organization and regulatory requirements for clinical studies designated for review by regulatory authorities, particular with FDA
Extensive Medical Affairs experience in the area of rheumatology, to include a well-documented history in medical development of several immune therapeutics and of leading relationships among product development, clinical development and marketing teams.
A well-established network within the medical affairs and research community of SpA and AS and overall Rheumatology that will attract high-caliber professionals into the Novartis organization.
Proven ability to build productive relationships and teams internally and externally, and the ability to develop high potential subordinates into leadership roles.
Reputation as an open, available and transparent communicator. Reputation as longstanding, trusted and respected partner to Rheumatology community, in clinical development and a medical affairs leadership role with skillset to engage and communicate on eye level with opinion leaders.
Strong leadership and organizational capabilities.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including a track record of meaningful contributions to the scientific literature throughout the course of the career (academia and/or industry), in collaboration with academic opinion leaders and academic medical centers leading the field of Rheumatology.
Experience leading large projects/organizations.
Ability to travel (U.S. and European; 20-25% annually, up to 40% seasonally).
